1. Historical Context

For much of the Twentieth century, following the foundational work of the German philosopher and Psychiatrist Karl Jaspers, there was a small but significant stream of publications in phenomenology and other areas of philosophy relevant to all areas of mental health and well-being (including psychiatry, psychology and the cognitive and neurosciences).  Since the early 1990s this small stream has become something of a torrent with a growing number of publications including several new journals and book series.

The 1990s, anticipated as the ‘decade of the brain’, saw the emergence of powerful new techniques in areas such as the cognitive and neurosciences. Yet the 1990s also proved to be the ‘decade of the mind’. For this was the decade that witnessed a resurgence of cross-disciplinary work between philosophy and mental health.

INPP’s support for publication is premised on the belief that this was no coincidence. INPP believes, as Jaspers’ believed, that in mental health, effective translation of research into improvements in clinical care depends on partnership between empirical methods for studying the brain (such as the cognitive and neurosciences) and philosophical and other methods for studying the mind.
